New Delhi: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma have strongly condemned the attack on Republic Bangla’s female journalists at Jadavpur University in West Bengal. The reporters were allegedly assaulted, detained, and forced to delete their footage while covering the ongoing tensions and protests at the campus.
Calling it a "direct attack on press freedom," Dhami praised Republic Network’s relentless journalism, stating, “The Republic team takes risks, travels to the most challenging places, and brings the truth to the people. Such attacks on journalists are unacceptable and should be condemned by all.”
Sarma went a step further, slamming the incident shows true colors of left, calling them 'violent'. He said, “The attack on Republic TV journalists by individuals with leftist ideologies at Jadavpur University reveals the true nature of the left, which often resorts to violence. This incident has exposed the left to the nation. I strongly condemn this attack.”
Republic Bangla reporter Pinki, who was covering the protests, revealed that she was detained inside the registrar’s office and pressured to delete the footage she had recorded. “This is not a private space. This is Aurobindo Bhawan, an open public area. Why are they so scared of what we have recorded?” she asked, exposing the attempts to suppress media coverage.
Another reporter, Hridita, faced a mob attack while reporting live. She was chased out of the university premises by an aggressive crowd. However, undeterred by the intimidation, she re-entered the campus, confronting those involved in the attack.
Amid the chaos, Republic Bangla’s journalist Santu Pan raised a serious concern—the presence of an ‘Azad Kashmir’ poster inside the university. He questioned whether any attempt had been made to remove the controversial poster, sparking further debate over what was being promoted inside the institution.
This shocking attack on journalists has reignited concerns about press freedom in West Bengal. Under Mamata Banerjee ’s government, reporters—especially those critical of the ruling TMC —have repeatedly faced harassment, threats, and even physical violence. The incident at Jadavpur University is just the latest example of how journalists are being muzzled in the state.
Republic Bangla has vowed to stand strong against any attempt to silence the press. The bigger question now is—will Mamata Banerjee’s government take action against those responsible, or will it once again turn a blind eye to the assault on journalism?
