New Delhi: A sudden and massive hailstorm swept through Delhi-NCR on Wednesday evening, bringing with it heavy rain and strong winds that reached speeds of up to 79 kmph. The severe weather caused widespread disruptions, including damage to the Delhi Metro's overhead equipment and external objects falling onto the tracks. As a result, metro services on multiple lines were affected, with the Red, Yellow, and Pink Lines experiencing major disruptions.
Following the incident, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) issued a service update, stating that due to the damage caused by the windstorm, metro services were being regulated on affected sections of the Red and Yellow Lines. The Pink Line, however, has been restored, and services are running normally. According to the DMRC, train services on the Red Line are operating on a single line between Dilshad Garden and New Bus Adda, while on the Yellow Line, services are operating on a single line between Vishwavidyalaya and Samaypur Badli.
The areas near Shaheed Nagar, Jahangirpuri, and Nizamuddin stations were among the worst affected, with damage to overhead equipment and external objects falling onto the tracks. The DMRC assured commuters that efforts were underway to remove the obstructions and restore the damaged overhead equipment to fully resume normal operations.
The DMRC later updated:
- Red Line: Dilshad Garden to New Bus Adda
- Yellow Line: Vishwavidyalaya to Samaypur Badli.
The DMRC is working to restore normalcy as soon as possible, with teams deployed to remove the obstructions and repair the damaged overhead equipment. The corporation has assured commuters that services on all other lines not impacted by the windstorm are running normally. However, services on the remaining sections of the Red and Yellow Lines are running with delays, although they are operational on both up and down lines.
The disruptions to metro services caused inconvenience to commuters, with many facing delays and difficulties in reaching their destinations. The DMRC has urged commuters to plan their journeys accordingly and check the latest service updates before heading out.
