Mumbai: The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) dismissed a bus driver for allegedly watching a cricket match on his mobile phone while driving. The incident occurred on the Shivneri bus travelling the Mumbai-Pune route on March 22, and the dismissal came after the driver’s behaviour was exposed in a viral video.
A passenger captured the shocking moment on camera, showing the driver engrossed in the cricket match while driving the bus full throttle on the Mumbai-Pune highway. It is after the video went viral that Maharashtra’s Transport Minister, Pratap Sarnaik, directed senior officials to take strict action.
The passenger shared the video on social media, tagging key officials including MSRTC and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Following the minister's intervention, the driver employed by a private operator managing the Shivneri service was dismissed. Additionally, the MSRTC fined the operator Rs 5,000 for compromising passenger safety.
Transport Minister Sarnaik expressed deep concern over the negligence, stating, "Shivneri is a key service on the Mumbai-Pune route. Several people travel by this bus. The service is known for being accident-free. It is necessary to take strict action against drivers who operate vehicles recklessly and endanger passengers."
Sarnaik also emphasised the need for stricter driver training programmes for private operators working under the MSRTC. Furthermore, he announced plans for new regulations to curb the growing issue of drivers, including those operating autorickshaws and taxis, using mobile phones for entertainment while driving.
