Nagpur: Massive violence erupted in Nagpur on Friday after rumors spread that a holy book of the Muslim community had been burned by certain organizations. The city witnessed serious clashes between the protesters and the police.
According to police, the protests erupted after rumours were spread that the holy book of the Muslim community was burnt during an agitation by a certain organisation for the removal of Aurangzeb's tomb.
Four people have been injured in the incident, police said.
As soon as the violence broke out, police arrived at the spot to take control of the situation.
"Two JCBs (were set ablaze) and a few more vehicles were also impacted. One fireman is injured..." an official said.
Police fired tear gas shells and resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the mob in Chitnis Park and Mahal areas.
Several four-wheelers were set afire by rioters. Police said that rioters also resorted to stone pelting.

Following the complaint about burning of holy books, a large number of Muslim community members started gathering in various parts of the city, including Mahal, Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, and Chitanvis Park.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis appealed to the citizens to fully cooperate with the administration in this situation and refrain from believing in any rumours.
“We are constantly in touch with the police administration and citizens should cooperate with them. Nagpur is a peaceful and co-operative city. This has been a permanent tradition of Nagpur,” Maharashtra CM Fadnavis said.
DCP Nagpur Archit Chandak also appealed to the citizens to not believe in any rumours. He said that situation is currently under control.
“This incident occurred due to some miscommunication. Situation is under control right now. Our force here is strong. I appeal to everyone to not step out...or pelt stones,” he said.
Police said that several cops have been injured in the incident.
