Nagpur: Thirty-eight-year-old Irfan Ansari, who was injured in the deadly violence that broke out in Nagpur, succumbed to his injuries on Saturday while undergoing treatment at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College & Hospital (IGGMCH).
According to officials, Ansari, who was admitted with grievous wounds, breathed his last at around 1:20 PM.
A welder by profession, Ansari left home around 11 PM on Monday — the day of the clashes — to catch a train to Itarsi from Nagpur Railway Station, one of the areas affected by the violence.
Deceased Suffered Severe Head Wounds, Broken Leg
Ansari’s brother Imran said he suffered severe head wounds and a fractured leg and was undergoing treatment in the ICU, receiving oxygen. The family remained unaware of what transpired during his journey to the railway station.
Govt Will Recover Cost of Property Damage: Vows Fadnavis
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday assured that the government would recover the cost of property damaged during the violence from the rioters.
Fadnavis said that if the perpetrators failed to compensate for the damages, their properties would be seized and sold to cover the losses.
He also asserted that strict action would be taken against those who attacked the police during the clashes.
‘No Political Angle to Violence…’
Responding to speculation that the riot in his hometown was orchestrated to target him politically, Fadnavis said, “It is foolish to say such things. There is no political angle to the violence.”
Violence Not an ‘Intelligence Failure’
Although the Chief Minister refused to call the incident an 'intelligence failure,' he acknowledged that intelligence gathering could have been better.
105 Persons Held So Far
According to Nagpur Police, 105 people have been taken into custody so far, including key accused and Minority Democratic Party leader Fahim Khan, who has been booked for sedition.
All About Nagpur Violence
Rioters on Monday, March 17, resorted to massive stone-pelting and arson in several parts of Nagpur — particularly old Nagpur — after rumours that a ‘chadar’ with holy inscriptions was burnt during protests led by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) gained momentum.
Why Did VHP Protest?
The VHP staged a protest demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb, located in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district.
