Vadodara: A 20-year-old law student, Rakshit Chaurasiya, who was involved in a fatal road accident that claimed one life and injured several others, has reportedly admitted to consuming bhaang (cannabis) after initially denying the use of any intoxicants.

The incident took place when Chaurasiya’s car rammed into a scooter in Vadodara. According to his statement to the police, he lost control of the vehicle after the airbags deployed, obstructed his vision.

Chaurasiya and his friend were returning from Dera Circle after dropping off another friend with whom they had attended Holika Dahan.

Recounting the sequence of events, he said, “We were ahead of a scooter, turning right, when we hit a pothole. A scooter and a car were parked near the turn, and our car brushed against the scooter. The airbags deployed instantly, and after that, I couldn’t see where the car went.”

He further claimed that the vehicle was moving at a speed of 50-60 kmph at the time of the accident. Officials are investigating the case further.

The woman killed in the Vadodara road accident has been identified as Hemali Patel, who was riding her scooter when the speeding car struck her.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Panna Momaya, the accused, Rakshit Chaurasiya, is a law student originally from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. He resides in a PG accommodation in the city.

“The car belonged to his friend Meet Chauhan, who was seated in the co-driver’s seat when Chaurasiya lost control and rammed into multiple two-wheelers at high speed while heading towards Muktanand Circle,” Momaya stated.

Cops are currently attempting to trace Chauhan.

A video recorded by an eyewitness shows Chauhan stepping out of the car, which had a completely wrecked front, and blaming Chaurasiya for the crash. Chaurasiya, appearing disoriented, can be heard repeatedly shouting, “Another round? Another round?” Moments later, bystanders confront and thrash him before handing him over to the police.

Meanwhile, CCTV footage accessed by the media captures the horrifying sequence of events. The car is seen speeding, colliding with two scooters, and dragging the riders along before coming to a stop.
