Vientiane: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first leader to address the East Asia Summit after the host and incoming chair, according to sources. This highlighted India’s growing importance within ASEAN, with Modi being recognized as the only leader to have participated in 9 out of the 19 East Asia Summits held so far.

During his address, PM Modi talked about India’s strong support for ASEAN unity and centrality. He emphasized that ASEAN lies at the heart of India’s Indo-Pacific vision and the Quad’s cooperation, which aims to ensure a stable and prosperous region. “There are deep parallels between India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans’ Initiative and the ASEAN Outlook on Indo-Pacific,” Modi said, stressing the importance of a free, open, inclusive, and rules-based Indo-Pacific for peace and progress.

PM Meets Antony Blinken During Summit

Earlier in the day, PM Modi held a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit in Vientiane, Laos. Modi also expressed his condolences over the loss of lives caused by Hurricane Milton in the U.S.

Currently, PM Modi is on a two-day visit to Laos, where he also participated in the 21st ASEAN-India Summit, a significant moment as India marks a decade of its Act East Policy. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Modi was warmly welcomed in Vientiane by senior Laotian ministers and accorded a ceremonial reception.

During his stay, Modi also had the opportunity to witness a traditional performance of the Lao Ramayan, known locally as ‘Phalak Phalam,’ showcasing the cultural connection between India and Laos. Sharing his experience on social media, Modi wrote, “It is heartening to see the people here remain in touch with the Ramayan. May the blessings of Prabhu Shri Ram always remain upon us!”.
