New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a scathing attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, accusing him of relying on NGO-generated data instead of official government reports. HM Shah's remarks came during the discussion on the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, which was later passed in the House.
“Since Rahul Gandhi has become a leader of the INDI alliance, he looks for the data issued by NGOs apart from the government. Sometimes, he reads speeches written by NGOs," Shah said while addressing opposition MPs.
Rahul Gandhi Claims He Is Being Silenced
Shah’s remarks came after Rahul Gandhi alleged that he was repeatedly denied a chance to speak in Parliament. "I am never allowed to speak... I don’t know what they are scared of," he told reporters.
Congress leaders, including Gaurav Gogoi, accused the ruling BJP of violating House traditions and submitted a letter raising concerns about the alleged suppression of the Leader of the Opposition’s voice and the absence of a Deputy Speaker in Lok Sabha since 2019.

‘India is Not a Dharamshala’
Speaking on the Immigration and Foreigners Bill, 2025, Shah defended the government's stance on national security, stating that India is not a Dharamshala (free shelter) for illegal immigrants.
"If someone comes to the nation to contribute to its development, they are always welcome," Shah clarified, while warning of strict action against Rohingyas and illegal Bangladeshi immigrants entering India.

Shah stressed that as India becomes the fifth-largest economy, its openness could be exploited by anti-national elements. The new bill aims to tighten border security and streamline immigration policies to monitor every foreigner entering the country.
Referring to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Shah reiterated that the law was introduced to provide refuge to persecuted minorities from neighboring countries, ensuring a structured legal system for handling immigration cases.
