Rain Lashes Parts of Delhi, Gurugram, Brings Temperature Down; More Showers Likely

Delhiites woke up to a pleasant morning on Friday as parts of Delhi-NCR witnessed a sudden weather change after weeks of punishing heat.

New Delhi: Light intensity rain lashed several parts of Delhi and its adjoining areas, including Gurugram, on Friday, bringing the temperature down. The minimum temperature on Friday settled at 28.4 degrees Celsius while the maximum temperature is likely to settle around 40 degrees Celsius.

In its forecast, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted some relief from the searing heatwave in Delhi over the weekend as the city is likely to witness partly cloudy sky on Saturday and Sunday.

Visuals have emerged from several areas including Sadar Bazar and RK Puram showing rain lashing the streets. Delhiites woke up to a pleasant morning on Friday as parts of Delhi-NCR witnessed a sudden weather change after weeks of punishing heat.

The residents had been battling a relentless heatwave in the region over a month.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its early morning bulletin predicted rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds with speeds of 30–50 kmph in many parts of Delhi and its adjoining areas. 

Meanwhile, the IMD has predicted that Monsoon will arrive in Delhi by June 30. The Air Quality Index (AQI) of the national capital was recorded in the "moderate" category with a reading of 173 at 1 pm, according to the Central Pollution Control Board. An AQI between zero and 50 is considered "good", 51 and 100 "satisfactory", 101 and 200 "moderate", 201 and 300 "poor", 301 and 400 "very poor", and 401 and 500 "severe". 

The IMD on Friday said the Southwest Monsoon has further advanced in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh & Odisha.

"Southwest Monsoon has advanced into some more parts of Maharashtra, remaining parts of Vidarbha, some parts of Madhya Pradesh, some more parts of Chhattisgarh & Odisha, some parts of Gangetic West Bengal, remaining parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and some parts of Jharkhand(Sic)," the IMD tweeted.

It added that conditions are favourable for further advancement of monsoon into some more parts of the country.

"Conditions are favourable for further advance of Monsoon into some more parts of North Arabian Sea, Gujarat State, remaining parts of Maharashtra, some more parts of MP, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar and some parts of East UP during next 3-4 days," the IMD further wrote. 

It also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of south India during the next five days. "Heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely over Kerala, Coastal & South Interior Karnataka, Konkan-Goa during next 5 days," it said.

Konkan and Goa are also likely to witness rainfall from June 21 to June 25, as per IMD forecast.

"Konkan & Goa is very likely to get isolated heavy (64.5-115.5 mm) to very heavy rainfall (115.5-204.4 mm) on 21st & 22nd June and likely to get isolated heavy (64.5-115.5 mm) to very heavy rainfall (115.5-204.4 mm) to extremely heavy falls (>204.4 mm) during 23rd-25th June, 2024, the IMD said.

Meanwhile, the weather agency has predicted heat wave for isolated pockets of West Uttar Pradesh from June 21 to 24 and in Jammu division from June 23 to 24.
