Ratan Tata Dies at 86: PM Modi, President Murmu Lead Tributes as India Mourns Industry Legend
As India bids farewell to the icon, an outpouring of condolences flooded in from leaders across the nation.
New Delhi: Ratan Tata, the chairman emeritus of the Tata Group, passed away on Wednesday, October 9, at the age of 86 after a long illness. The philanthropist had been in the hospital due to health issues related to his age. A recipient of Padma Vibhushan breathed his last at south Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital. Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran confirmed the death late in the evening.
"It is with a profound sense of loss that we bid farewell to Mr Ratan Naval Tata, a truly uncommon leader whose immeasurable contributions have shaped not only the Tata Group but also the very fabric of our nation," N Chandrasekaran said in a statement.
"For the Tata Group, Mr Tata was more than a chairperson. To me, he was a mentor, guide and friend. He inspired by example. With an unwavering commitment to excellence, integrity, and innovation, the Tata Group under his stewardship expanded its global footprint while always remaining true to its moral compass. Mr Tata’s dedication to philanthropy and the development of society has touched the lives of millions. From education to healthcare, his initiatives have left a deep-rooted mark that will benefit generations to come. Reinforcing all of this work was Mr Tata’s genuine humility in every individual interaction. On behalf of the entire Tata family, I extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones. His legacy will continue to inspire us as we strive to uphold the principles he so passionately championed," it added.
In addition to his business ventures, Ratan Tata is profoundly known for his charitable work. He led Tata Group from 1991 to 2012 and played a key role in its growth and expansion. And as India bids farewell to the icon, an outpouring of condolences flooded in from leaders across the nation.
Mortal remains of Ratan Tata, draped in the national flag, are kept at NCPA lawns for the public to pay last respects. The last rites will be held at Worli crematorium after 4 pm today. As many as 200 people are expected to be present to bid farewell to the iconic industrialists.
President Droupadi Murmu :
Expressing condolences, President Droupadi Murmu said, “In the sad demise of Shri Ratan Tata, India has lost an icon who blended corporate growth with nation building, and excellence with ethics. A recipient of Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan, he took forward the great Tata legacy and gave it a more impressive global presence. He inspired seasoned professionals and young students alike. His contribution to philanthropy and charity is invaluable. I convey my condolences to his family, the entire team of the Tata Group and his admirers across the globe.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi :
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, calling Tata a 'visionary leader, a compassionate person, and an extraordinary human being.'
In a post on X, the PM said, "Shri Ratan Tata Ji was a visionary business leader and a compassionate soul. He gave strong leadership to one of India’s oldest and most respected business groups. His impact went beyond business, as he was known for his kindness, humility, and dedication to improving society. One of the most unique aspects of Shri Ratan Tata Ji was his passion towards dreaming big and giving back. He was at the forefront of championing causes like education, healthcare, sanitation, and animal welfare to name a few."
Remembering the chairman emeritus of Tata Group, several other prominent political leaders, including Rajnath Singh , Amit Shah , Rahul Gandhi , and many others also took to X to express their sorrow at the loss of one of India’s most beloved entrepreneurs.
In a post on X, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, “Saddened by the passing away of Shri Ratan Tata. He was a Titan of the Indian industry known for his monumental contributions to our economy, trade and industry. My deepest condolences to his family, friends and admirers. May his soul rest in peace.”

Calling it an 'end of era,' External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed his condolences in a post on X. He said, "The passing away of Ratan Tata is the end of an era. He was deeply associated with the modernisation of Indian industry. And even more so with its globalisation. Was my privilege to have interacted with him on numerous occasions. And benefitted from his vision and insights. Join the nation in mourning his demise. Om shanti."

Vijayan in his tweet said, "Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Ratan Tata, an industrialist with a lasting legacy in Indian history. His unwavering support for Kerala ’s development will always be remembered. Heartfelt condolences to his family and the Tata Group."
BJP leader and former Union Minister Smriti Irani in a post on X said, "His legend is built on his vision , his ability to be kind when none kept a count or were looking his way overwhelmed those who had the privilege to witness him in action. His love for fellow beings transcended boundaries of faith & physicality. Ratan Tata , you live in the lives you nourished ; you thrive in the ideas you nurtured . Farewell , rest in peace."

On the demise of Ratan Tata, author-philanthropist and Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murty said, "... In my life, I met him (Ratan Tata), a man of integrity, and simplicity, always caring for others and compassionate... I really miss him... I don't think in my experience I met anyone like him. May I only pray, may his soul rest in peace. he was a legend, there was an era, but this is the end of an era for me... He was a person of integrity, integrity was so important. He was like that. He had enormous patience. He was a simple man... I learn philanthropy in the House of Tatas only. It's my personal loss... I feel now vacuumed in my personal life..."

My condolences to all his family members and colleagues."
