New Delhi: The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has issued a red alert in Palakkad district due to dangerously high ultraviolet (UV) radiation levels.
According to an official statement released on Thursday, meters installed at Thrithala and Ponnani in Palakkad and Malappuram districts recorded a UV index of 11.
This falls under the extreme category, posing high health risks, including sunburn, skin diseases, eye problems, and other complications from prolonged exposure.
With peak UV levels occurring between 10 AM and 3 PM, authorities have advised the public to limit direct sun exposure during these hours. Those at higher risk include outdoor workers, fishermen, bikers, tourists, individuals with skin or eye conditions, cancer patients, and people with weakened immune systems. To minimize risks, residents are urged to wear full-body cotton clothing, use hats, umbrellas, and sunglasses, and take other protective measures when stepping outside.
