The process to demolish unauthorized sections of the Sanjauli mosque commenced on Monday, following a court order from the Shimla municipal commissioner. The ruling mandated the removal of three unauthorized floors of the mosque, specifically targeting the second, third, and fourth levels.

The decision comes after growing protests from Hindu organizations, which have been vocal in their demands for the demolition of the illegal constructions. The next court hearing regarding this matter is scheduled for December 21.

The Waqf Board was instructed to complete the demolition within two months after receiving the order on October 16. Muhammad Latif, president of the mosque committee, confirmed the receipt of the demolition order and stated that the committee had previously offered to take down the unauthorized portions following a violent protest on September 11, which left ten people injured.

Latif emphasized that the decision to voluntarily demolish the unauthorized floors was made to maintain peace and harmony in the community. “It was a big decision to offer to demolish the mosque to ensure peace and brotherhood in the state,” he noted. The mosque committee consulted various stakeholders, including local shopkeepers and community leaders, who collectively advocated for a peaceful resolution.

However, the Muslim community in the state remains divided over the court's ruling. The All Himachal Muslim’s Organisation (AHMO) has announced plans to challenge the order in the appellate court and intends to pursue the matter up to the Supreme Court if necessary.
