A New York-bound Air India flight, carrying 303 passengers, returned to Mumbai on Monday morning after being airborne for nearly nine hours following a bomb threat, according to officials.

Nothing suspicious was found after the aircraft was thoroughly checked by security agencies and it was rescheduled to operate at 5 am on Tuesday, they informed.

A passenger spotted a note with the message 'There is a bomb in the flight' written on it inside one of the lavatories and alerted the crew, a Sahar police official here said and added that the aircraft made an emergency landing.

The Boeing 777-300 ER aircraft landed safely at the Mumbai airport at 10.25 am.

Former Himachal Pradesh chief minister Jai Ram Thakur on Monday slammed the governor's address to the state assembly and said the only "achievement" of the Congress government is to take a loan of Rs 30,000 crore in two years.

"We respect the governor, but his address given by the Congress government was lengthy and far from truth as there was nothing to list as achievement," Thakur, who is also leader of opposition in the assembly, told reporters here.

In his address on the opening day of Budget session of state assembly, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla said the state government has fulfilled six out of 10 poll promises and the pace of development is not retarded in spite of financial constraints.

Days after its Delhi-bound aircraft returned to Chicago due to unserviceable lavatories, Air India on Monday said its probe found that polythene bags, rags, and clothes had been flushed down and were stuck in the plumbing.

On March 6, AI126 from Chicago to Delhi returned to the US city after being airborne for more than 10 hours and on that day, the airline said the air return was due to a technical issue.

The same day, a source aware of the development told PTI that the aircraft had to return, as many of the lavatories were clogged.

In a detailed statement on the air return of AI126, Air India on Monday said that about an hour and forty-five minutes into the flight, the crew reported some of the lavatories in Business and Economy Class to be unserviceable.

"Subsequently, eight of the 12 lavatories in the aircraft became unserviceable, causing discomfort to all on board," the statement said.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami held a review meeting today with officials from all relevant departments regarding the Char Dham Yatra. He directed them to finalise and streamline all preparations to ensure the smooth operation of the pilgrimage.

"Related to the case of gangrape of two persons including a foreigner woman near Tungabhadra left bank canal, Sanapura lake, Junglee road near Hampi on 06.03.2025 is a shocking matter for the state and the country, and the Karnataka State Women's Commission has taken this matter very seriously. So, I request them to give maximum punishment to the accused in this case and to ensure that such cases do not recur in the future and to provide more protection to women in tourist places. I request you to submit the report of the legal action taken on the above case to the Karnataka State Commission for Women as soon as possible."
 

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Monday witnessed heated exchanges between opposition and treasury benches over multiple contentious issues, including the killing of civilians in Kathua and the controversy surrounding the Gulmarg fashion show.

As soon as the House assembled, members of the National Conference (NC), People's Democratic Party (PDP), and two Independent MLAs stood up in protest, condemning the fashion show as "obscene" and alleging that it hurt religious sentiments.

“The facilitation of such an event during Ramzan must be probed,” demanded PDP MLA Mir Mohammad Fayaz. NC MLA Tanvir Sadiq also raised objections, calling for immediate action.

The mortal remains of Gurpreet Singh, which were recovered on Sunday, have been sent to his native place in Punjab in a hearse van.

Rescue personnel guided by the Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) surveys conducted by the scientists of National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) in Hyderabad are focusing efforts at suspected locations. The search was further aided by Human Remains Detection Dogs (HRDD) of Kerala police, a senior official told PTI.

The dogs have been deployed twice inside the tunnel so far and might be sent in again on March 11, he said.

A robot along with all other surveillance material, including camera, modules and tools, shall be operational by March 11 and another one should be in place by March 14, he added.

The Assam government announced on Monday that it would have its own satellite, which will help collect data for the implementation of critical socio-economic projects, besides keeping surveillance on its border.

The announcement was made by Finance Minister Ajanta Neog while presenting the state budget for 2025-26.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma later claimed that Assam will be the first state in the country to have its own satellite.

"In collaboration with IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre) of the Department of Space, Government of India, we would like to set up our own satellite, ASSAMSAT, to ensure a continuous, reliable flow of data for the implementation of critical socio-economic projects," Neog said in her budget speech.

On Monday, Karnataka police has arrested the third suspect in the Hampi rape case. The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Saranabasava, had been on the run since the incident. He was working as a carpenter and was arrested by Gangavathi Rural police in Chennai, Tamil Nadu's capital city, before being brought back to Karnataka.

On Monday, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) carried out searches at the residence of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister's son Chaitanya Baghel and others. These searches are part of an ongoing investigation into an alleged multi-crore liquor scam. According to sources, raids are being conducted at 14 locations across Chhattisgarh, focusing on purported irregularities in the liquor trade, suspected illegal commissions, and money laundering activities.

An Air India flight from Mumbai to New York received a bomb threat on Monday morning and the flight is diverted to Bombay. The threat was received via a note message on found in tissue paper in laboratory. All passengers and crew members are safe. Security agencies are on high alert, and all safety protocols are being strictly followed.

Manipur Police arrested 15 members of various insurgent groups during multiple raids across the state on March 8 and 9 after clashes broke out in kangpokpi district, according to an official statement. The police reported that the situation in the state was tense but under control over the last 24 hours. Security forces conducted search operations and area domination in the fringe and vulnerable areas of hill and valley districts.

Seven persons were killed and 14 others injured in a collision between a truck and a sports utility vehicle (SUV) in Madhya Pradesh's Sidhi district early on Monday, police said.

The incident took place at around 2.30 am near Upni petrol pump on Sidhi-Bahri Road, Deputy Superintendent of Police Gayatri Tiwari said.

The vehicles collided head-on when the SUV (a taxi service) carrying members of a family was going towards Maihar, while the truck was heading to Bahri from Sidhi, she said.

Seven persons travelling in the SUV were killed and 14 other occupants were injured in the accident, the official said.

Nine injured persons were referred to neighbouring Rewa for further treatment and the others were being treated at the Sidhi district hospital, she said.

The truck driver was detained, the official said, adding further investigation was underway. 

A 26-year-old female doctor was found dead by hanging in her room in Delhi's Rohini Sector 8 on Sunday. The reason behind her suicide is yet to be determined. The police are questioning her family and have launched an investigation into the case. Further details are awaited
