Patna: A major showdown between Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and former CM, RJD MLC Rabri Devi, was witnessed at the Bihar Legislative Council after he targeted the former CM, questioning her political legitimacy. Nitish remarked that the party Rabri Devi represented belonged to her husband, Lalu Prasad Yadav , and suggested that she was merely brought in to assume the role of Chief Minister.
Nitish Kumar expressed disbelief at her continued presence in politics, asking members of the House if they had ever seen a party or a situation like this.
Nitish Kumar lost his temper after RJD MLCs, who arrived in the House wearing green badges, alleged that the BJP -JD(U) government had stolen the reservation benefits given to deprived castes by the previous RJD government.
The quotas were passed by the RJD-led government in 2023 when Rabri’s son, Tejashwi Yadav, was Deputy Chief Minister. However, the increased reservation was quashed by the Patna High Court months later.
Nitish Kumar was visibly upset when the RJD tried to take credit for working for the deprived castes in the state, while he himself was the Chief Minister at the time. He asked one of the MLCs to stand up so that the badges and green attire could be seen clearly.
When Rabri Devi tried to intervene and object to the Bihar CM's remarks, Nitish Kumar snubbed the former Chief Minister, saying she should stay out of it as the party didn’t belong to her but to her husband.
Nitish Kumar then launched a scathing attack on Rabri Devi, questioning her political legitimacy and stating that she was propped up by her husband when he was in trouble.
Rabri Devi first assumed the post in 1997 after Lalu Prasad had to step down following his involvement in the fodder scam.
