Sonam Wangchuk, 20 Others Detained For Protesting Near Ladakh Bhawan
According to Jigmat Paljor, Coordinator of the Leh Apex Body, a significant crowd gathered in support, with over 100 supporters present by 11 AM.
The police detained over 30 protesters near Ladakh Bhawan in New Delhi on Sunday morning, as tensions escalated surrounding the ongoing hunger strike by Ladakh-based climate activist Sonam Wangchuk. The hunger strike, now in its eighth day, aims to secure greater autonomy for Ladakh's administration.
According to Jigmat Paljor, Coordinator of the Leh Apex Body, a significant crowd gathered in support, with over 100 supporters present by 11 AM. However, police began blocking roads leading to the Ladakh Bhawan and deploying forces by 10:30 AM. As a result, 38 supporters were detained, while Wangchuk remained in a nearby park and was not among those arrested.
The detained protesters have reportedly been taken to various police stations, including Mandir Marg Police Station. The police action has raised concerns about the freedom to protest and the handling of peaceful demonstrations in the capital.
