Stone-pelting Disrupts MPL Final Match in Gwalior; Outrage Over Entry Denial, Many Injured

Gwalior: Several people including a policeman were injured in the clash in Madhya Pradesh's Gwalior after violence disrupted the final match of MPL as stone-pelting broke out late into the night on Sunday, prompting police to intervene. Police officials used mild force to control the crowd. The Sunday showdown saw Bhopal Leopards facing off against Jabalpur Lions, with the Lions emerging victorious by dismissing the Leopards for 216 runs to claim the championship title.

How The Incident Happened?

Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association had arranged free tickets online to watch the match. During the final match a large crowd of young women and children gathered to enter the Shrimant Madhav Rao Scindia Cricket Stadium, during which famous IPS Manoj Sharma (on which 12th fail film was based). When he reached VVIP gate with his wife, he got stuck in the crowd. During this time, when the crowd gathered at the VVIP gate along with the wife of the famous superstar Manoj Sharma, she was safely taken inside the entrance gate and to bring the situation under control, the police resorted to lathi charge. The youth also started attacking police and civilians, leaving a teenager bleeding, while policemen were also seriously injured. Videos of this ruckus are now going viral on social media. In the incident a man sustained head injuries, the victim was identified as Kamlesh Gurjar. A policeman was also hit by a stone. 

The capacity of the stadium is 30 thousand spectators, whereas 12 to 15 thousand people had come to watch the match.

About MPL

Madhya Pradesh Premier League-2024 was organised at Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium in Gwalior. Five teams Gwalior Cheetahs, Bhopal Leopards, Rewa Jaguars, Jabalpur Lions, and Malwa Panthers participated in it. The tournament started on June 15 and lasted for 9 days. In the final match, Bhopal Leopard won the toss and chose bowling. Jabalpur Lions scored 249 runs at the loss of 4 wickets in 20 overs.

It is noteworthy that on the lines of IPL, a colorful program was organized with celebrities, cheer girls and spectacular fireworks to attract cricket lovers in the final match of MPL 2024, due to which cricket lovers flocked to the newly constructed Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium in Shankarpur, away from the city.
