Sambhal: A massive crowd gathered and raised slogans after Jama Masjid Sadar Chief Zafar Ali was taken into police custody on Sunday in connection with the 2024 Sambhal violence.
Shahi Mosque Committee Chief, Zafar Ali was taken into custody by a SIT team of the Sambhal police. He was brought to Chandausi for a medical examination amid heavy security.
Following Ali's arrest, Circle Officer Anuj Chaudhary assured that the situation in the area remains peaceful.
"There are no new arrangements made...Forces have been deployed to maintain peace... There is peace in the area..." CO Anuj Chaudhary said.
Security has been heightened in the area to maintain law and order and forces in large numbers conducted a flag march in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal, police said.
Zafar Ali has denied any involvement in the Sambhal riots. "I did not incite any violence..." said Jama Sadar chief said while being taken into custody.
The Sambhal violence erupted on November 24 last year during an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) inspection of a Mughal-era mosque, resulting in four deaths and numerous injuries to both police personnel and locals.
The chargesheet identified 159 individuals as accused and revealed that weapons seized from the violence site and other locations were produced in the United Kingdom, USA, Germany, and Czechoslovakia.
