New Delhi: A major security scare unfolded in Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district early Friday after a suspicious Scorpio SUV breached multiple security checkpoints on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, prompting police to open fire and launch a massive search operation.
According to officials, the Scorpio was travelling from Srinagar towards Jammu when police signalled it to stop at the Chanderkote security checkpoint around 3.30 am. However, the driver ignored the signal and sped towards the Nashri area, evading security personnel.
Police fired three rounds at the fleeing vehicle in an attempt to intercept it, but the SUV continued its escape. A joint search operation involving the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the Army was immediately launched to trace the vehicle.
Officials later said the driver abandoned the Scorpio near Dalwas and fled the spot before security forces could apprehend him. The suspicious vehicle has since been seized by the district police.
