Tehran: The Iranian police have successfully rescued three Indian nationals who were kidnapped in Tehran while attempting to travel to Australia via an illegal route. The victims, who hailed from Punjab, were allegedly lured by a travel agent promising a passage to Australia and were kidnapped upon arrival in Iran.
The three Indian men, identified as Hushanpreet Singh from Sangrur, Jaspal Singh from SBS Nagar, and Amritpal Singh from Hoshiarpur, have been rescued by Tehran police from Varamin city in southern Tehran. Reportedly, the trio had travelled to Iran on May 1, for illegal passage to Australia via a ‘dunki’ route for high-paying jobs.
The kidnappers, allegedly linked to Pakistan-based agents, demanded a ransom of Rs 1 crore for their release. As per reports, the families of the victims received distressing photos and videos showing the men with bound hands and visible injuries. An investigation has been launched to determine the involvement of Pakistani intelligence agencies.
According to the Iranian Embassy in India, the men are safe, and their families have been informed. The embassy had earlier warned Indian citizens about falling prey to unauthorised agents promising overseas opportunities.
The Indian Embassy in Tehran and Iranian authorities are working together to investigate the case. The possible involvement of Pakistani entities has raised diplomatic concerns, and India is pressing for further action to ensure the safety of its citizens abroad.
Earlier, the Iranian embassy in New Delhi confirmed that it was investigating the matter, and said the case was being followed up by Iran’s foreign ministry in coordination with judicial authorities.
Meanwhile, the experts suggested that the incident has highlighted the need for Indian citizens to exercise caution when travelling abroad, particularly through unofficial channels. They even suggested that the Indian government should take measures to regulate overseas travel routes and prevent human trafficking.
