A meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Oval Office on Friday ended in a tense exchange, with Trump declaring that Zelenskyy is "not ready for peace". The meeting, which was intended to discuss the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, quickly devolved into a heated exchange between the two leaders. Trump, who has been seeking to broker a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia, expressed frustration with Zelenskyy's stance on the issue.
According to sources, Trump told Zelenskyy that he needs to be more flexible in his negotiations with Russia, and that his refusal to compromise is hindering the peace process. Zelenskyy, however, remained steadfast in his position, reiterating his commitment to defending Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The tense exchange between the two leaders was evident in their body language, with Trump at one point reportedly slamming his hand on the table in frustration. Zelenskyy, meanwhile, remained calm and composed, but firm in his resolve.
The high-stakes meeting between US President Trump and Ukrainian President Zelensky turned sour on Friday, with Trump warning Zelensky that he was "gambling with World War III". The tension began when Zelensky seemed to condescend to Vice President JD Vance, prompting Vance to respond that it was "disrespectful for you to come into the Oval Office to try to litigate this in front of the American media". This sparked a heated argument among the leaders, with Trump eventually telling Zelensky that he was "not ready for peace".

Trump tore into Zelensky, saying, “We gave you, through this stupid president (Joe Biden), $350 billion. We gave you military equipment... If you didn't have our military equipment, if you didn't have our military equipment, this war would have been over in two weeks.” He added, “You have to be thankful... You don't have the cards.”
Zelensky defended Ukraine's position, asking Vance, "Have you ever been to Ukraine? Have you seen the problems we have?". He later added that Vance "will feel" things.

Trump's Blunt Message
Trump's message to Zelensky was clear, when he said, “Don't tell us what we're going to feel. You are in no position to dictate what we're going to feel.” He warned Zelensky that he was "gambling with World War III" and that his actions were "very disrespectful to the country, this country that's backed you far more than a lot of people say they should".
Meeting Deemed Failed
The meeting, which was initially expected to include signing a framework deal giving the US a stake in Ukraine's rare-earth elements, ended in disarray. Zelensky departed after his heated interaction with Trump, and the press conference was cancelled.
Following the meeting, Trump declared on Truth Social that Zelensky's visit was over, saying, "I have determined that President Zelenskyy is not ready for Peace if America is involved". Zelensky later posted a conciliatory tweet, thanking America for its support and saying that Ukraine needs "just and lasting peace".
The meeting ended with no clear resolution or agreement, and it remains to be seen how the tense exchange will affect the ongoing peace negotiations. The US and Ukraine have been allies in the conflict against Russia, but the relationship has been strained at times due to differences in approach and strategy.
