Lucknow: Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has come under intense criticism from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath following his alleged disparaging remarks about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The remarks have sparked a major controversy.

In a statement, CM Yogi Adityanath highlighted that while freedom of expression is a fundamental right, it should not be used to attack others or cause division. He said, "Freedom of expression should align with the law and constitutional values. It should not be used to harm others. It's unfortunate that some people use their freedom to divide the country. The law should take action against those creating such divisions."

The controversy began when Kunal Kamra, during his stand-up show in Mumbai, shared videos that allegedly mocked Eknath Shinde, leading to an uproar. The Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel filed a complaint, prompting the Mumbai Police to register an FIR against Kamra on March 24. Kamra was subsequently summoned by the police.

In an exclusive interview with ANI, CM Yogi Adityanath further explained his position, saying that freedom of expression should not be used to harm others. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis also supported this view, condemning Kamra’s remarks and emphasizing that the government would not tolerate any misuse of freedom of expression that leads to disrespect.

Kamra’s videos from his show at The Habitat venue in Mumbai led to violent protests, and 12 Shiv Sainiks were arrested for vandalizing the venue. Despite the backlash, Kamra issued a statement on social media on Monday, maintaining that he would not apologize for his remarks. He defended his right to joke about public figures, stating, "Our right to freedom of speech is not only to fawn over the powerful. It is not against the law to poke fun at our leaders and the political system."

Kamra also said he was willing to cooperate with the police but questioned whether the law would be applied equally to those who resorted to violence in response to his jokes. He made it clear that he would not apologize and dismissed any threats, stating that he did not fear any "mob."

The investigation into the matter continues, with authorities weighing their next steps.
