Union Home Minister Amit Shah Holds Key Briefing with Governor Bhalla Over Escalating Situation in Manipur

Guwahati: Union Home Minister Amit Shah was on Saturday was briefed by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on the current security scenario and operation status in Manipur . 

Following the meeting on implementation of the new criminal laws under Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, chaired by Home Minister Amit Shah and attended by the Chief Ministers of all Northeastern States barring Manipur which is under President’s Rule with suspended animation of the State Legislative Assembly, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla who had represented the State in the meeting, separately briefed Shah on the current scenario in the State.

Ever since President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur, Union Home Minister Shah has been personally monitoring each and every development in the State and particularly matters related to security and operations.

Earlier, when his visit to the Northeast was confirmed there were also rumours that Shah will be visiting Manipur, however, it turned out to be just rumours as no such visit was scheduled, as per sources from the MHA.

Though not much has been revealed as what issues were discussed between the Union Home Minister and Governor Bhalla, sources close to the Raj Bhawan has informed that matters related to reconciliation efforts under the supervision of MHA were discussed in the meeting. Apart from this, issues related to surrendering of arms and ammunitions, free vehicular movement between the hills and the valley etc are to be discussed as well.

It may be mentioned that the situation in Manipur continues to remain on the edge as reconciliation measures are particularly being opposed by the Kuki Zo civil society organisations. 

Earlier this month, on March 8, protests turned violent in Kangpokpi district as they targeted security forces who were escorting a vehicle to the Hills as part of the vehicular movement between hills and valleys facilitated by the Ministry of Home Affairs. 

According to sources, MHA has also sent clear message to the organisation opposing the move that it will be not tolerated for long.
