By 9:30 PM on Wednesday, March 26, the number of complaints had significantly decreased.

Unified Payments Interface is an instant real-time payment system developed by the National Payments Corporation of India.

As per DownDetector, over 80 per cent of users struggled to make payments, 14 per cent faced issues transferring funds, and 5 per cent reported app-related problems.

List of apps that faced payment issues:

  • Google Pay
  • Paytm
  • PhonePe
  • State Bank of India app
  • Other banking apps using UPI"

As frustrated users took to social media to highlight the issue, one person said that it was for the very first time he had experienced problems while making payments using UPI. Another user reported that money was being debited but not credited to the receiver’s account.

A user named Yashwanth Sam Palaghat shared his concerns, saying, “UPI was down for the first time and it’s already showing an impact. Most of us have already stopped carrying liquid cash, and this downtime has created a do-or-die situation.”

As the UPI outage persisted, many people expressed the importance of carrying some amount of cash for situations like these.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) acknowledged intermittent technical issues, which resulted in a partial service decline for UPI. However, NPCI confirmed that the issues have now been addressed and the system has stabilised.

UPI is one of the most widely used payment services in India, as the interface is available across almost all digital payment apps, whether banking apps or third-party apps.

In January 2025, UPI transactions reached nearly 17 billion, with a total value exceeding ₹23.48 lakh crore.
