Ahmedabad: In one of the deadliest aviation accidents, an Air India flight AI171 bound for London crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon. The aircraft, a Boeing jet carrying 242 passengers and 12 crew members, crashed into a medical college complex in the city’s Meghaninagar area and burst into flames. The accident claimed at least 265 lives, including all cabin crew members.
Among those who tragically lost their lives in the Ahmedabad plane crash was Roshni Rajendra Songhare, a 27-year-old Air India cabin crew member and travel influencer from Dombivli, Maharashtra.
Roshni had been working as a flight attendant with Air India and was also active on social media, where she shared travel-related content with over 54,000 followers on Instagram. She was onboard duty during the flight, which crashed just minutes after taking off.
Her death was confirmed by Maharashtra MLA Ravindra Chavan, who expressed deep sorrow, “We are profoundly saddened by the tragic demise of Ms. Roshni Songhare from Dombivli in the devastating plane crash in Ahmedabad. As a dedicated flight crew member, her untimely loss is a heart-wrenching tragedy. May her soul attain eternal peace.”
Roshni lived with her parents, Rajendra and Rajshree, and younger brother Vignesh, in Nav Umiya Krupa Society, Dombivli East. The family had moved from Mumbai’s Grant Road two years ago. Despite facing financial struggles, Roshni worked hard to complete her education and achieve her dream of becoming a flight attendant.
She had only left home a day before the crash to report for duty in Ahmedabad. Her family and the local community are devastated by the loss.
According to officials, the plane crash may have been caused by a technical failure, although the exact reason is still under investigation.
Video shows the aircraft taking off and then rapidly losing altitude before crashing. The intense fire from 1.25 lakh litres of aviation fuel made rescue efforts nearly impossible.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel visited the crash site. DNA testing is underway to help identify all victims.
The Ministry of External Affairs is also coordinating with embassies of foreign nationals who were on board.
