Swami Vivekananda, born Narendra Nath Datta on January 12, 1863, in Kolkata, is revered as a pivotal figure in introducing Indian philosophies, particularly Vedanta, to the Western world. As a devout disciple of the Indian saint Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Vivekananda's life was marked by his deep spiritual commitment and his mission to promote interfaith understanding.

In 1887, Swami Vivekananda, along with his fellow disciples, took formal vows to adopt sannyasa, renouncing worldly pleasures and dedicating their lives to spiritual pursuits. This marked the beginning of a lifelong journey of spreading his guru's teachings. To further this mission, he founded the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission, institutions dedicated to the service of humanity and the propagation of Vedantic philosophy.

Swami Vivekananda's influence extended far beyond India. In 1893, he travelled to the United States to attend the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago. His iconic opening words, "Sisters and brothers of America ..." resonated deeply, earning him a standing ovation and establishing him as a significant spiritual ambassador. This speech not only captivated his audience but also laid the groundwork for a greater acceptance and understanding of Hinduism in the West.

Following his success at the Parliament, Vivekananda spent several years delivering hundreds of lectures across the United States, England, and Europe. His teachings emphasised the universal principles of Hindu philosophy, advocating for a spiritual and cultural exchange between East and West. Through his eloquent speeches and writings, he illuminated the profound depth of Indian spirituality and its relevance to the modern world.
