Regional books have always made India proud. The authors of regional books have gained a lot of appreciation and love over the years. Here are three regional authors that made a mark on readers across India.

Munshi Premchand

Munshi Premchand (1880-1936) is a prominent Hindi writer and a dramatist. Premchand also wrote novels in the Urdu language. He is amongst the most famous regional writers from the 20th century. As a Hindi writer, Premchand has written approximately a dozen novels, 250 short stories, and numerous essays and translations. His writing is still read by many, till this date, and some of his works are even taught in schools. Some of his famous books include- Asar-e-Ma’abid (Urdu), Devasthan Rahasya (Hindi), Prema (Hindi), and Hamkhurma-o-Ham Sawab (Urdu).

S. L. Bhyrappa

S. L. Bhyrappa is a popular Kannada writer. He has been one of the bestselling novelists for over 25 years now. Many of his novels are widely translated to various Indian languages. In fact, he has been one of the bestselling novelists in Marathi for over a decade now and is among the top-five bestselling authors in Hindi. S.L. Bhyrappa's books are a part of the undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses of the universities in Karnataka and have been the subject of about 20 PhD dissertations. Bhyrappa is an avid listener of both Western and Indian classical music and has a keen eye for Art. Travelling has been his passion since childhood and he has travelled across the globe touching the glaciers of poles, forests of Amazon, deserts of Africa, bustling cities of Europe and the United States. Some of his best novels include- Kavalu (2010), Daatu (1973), and Parva (1979).

Purushottam Laxman Deshpande

Purushottam Laxman Deshpande (1919-2000) was a Marathi writer and humourist from Maharashtra. He was also a very famous stage and film actor, music composer, scriptwriter, and a singer. He was commonly known as Pu La Deshpande, and was also referred to as ‘Maharashtra’s beloved personality’. Some of his most famous books include- Gangot (1966), Gandhiji (1970), and Guna Green Awadi (1975).
