5 Stephen King novels that will send shivers down your spine

Stephen King is a renowned genre-defining author. His prolific works include IT, Carrie, The Shining, Cujo amongst others which have been adapted into films.

Hollywood has made several movies and television shows based on Stephen King's books. From Gerald’s Game to The Mist, and Mr. Mercedes, to the terrifying movie It, the author's stories have gained immense popularity amongst the audience. While it is tough to narrow down Stephen King’s prolific work to just four novels, here's a list of some of his greatest works to read on occasion of Halloween.

1. Cujo

One of the most realistic novels, Cujo is downright scary, and perhaps will make you question your love for dogs. No, really! In an interview, King revealed that he did not remember writing this book as he was struggling with his drug addiction. The plot revolves around Trenton and his family, as he moves Castle York from New York with his wife and four-year-old son. The couple faces marital problems. The family owns a dog, Cujo who is fun-loving and jolly but gets bit by a rabid bat. The rabid dog kills several people before eyeing on its final prey, a mother and her son.

2. The Shining

The Shining is an inseparable part of the American pop culture. It was adapted into a film by the same name. Jack Torrence, an alcoholic author, brings his wife and son to his new job as a caretaker of a hotel to make money that would support his writing. He started encountering ghosts in the hotel. Though he has telepathic powers to communicate with the lost souls, the hotel’s negative energy overpowers him and convinces him to kill his wife and son.

3. Carrie

Stephen King’s debut novel Carrie proved to be a huge hit for the prolific writer. It has been made into several movies. The book is a social commentary about bullying, adolescence, and religious fanaticism. One of the sources of terror is the little girl’s revenge upon her classmates.

4. It

Those freaked out by clowns, well, this is the stuff of nightmares. It is about a clown called Pennywise who lives in sewers and feeds on little kids. As the book unfolds, it is revealed that It stalks the town of Maine which is Derry. This monster wakes up every 27 years to destroy everything. A group of children confront to get rid of this monstrous evil. Recently, the second sequel of the feature film It was released in theatres.

5.   The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon

The novel showcases a girl who gets lost in the woods. She has nothing except her backpack which consists of a water bottle, twinkies, a boiled egg, a tuna sandwich, a Game Boy, poncho, a walkman and a bottle of the surge. The protagonist survives through weird times as her idol Tom Gordon helps the girl confront her fears.
