Holi is the festival of colours and is celebrated with vigour across the country. This year the festival will be celebrated on March 14, a day after the Holika Dahan rituals. While the playful spirit of throwing coloured powders in the air is one of the most iconic aspects of the festival, another intriguing tradition that stands out is the widespread practice of wearing white clothes on Holi. Be it in Bollywood movies or Holi party invites, whit seems to be the reigning colour on the day. With the advent of social media and Instagram, the colour has gained even more prominence with people wearing spotless white outfits, only to have it drenched in water and colours later. However, the tradition of wearing white on Holi was not birthed just for the picturesque aspect of it. Know the significance behind wearing white on the auspicious day.
White, often associated with purity, peace, and new beginnings, holds a deep symbolic meaning in Hindu culture. By wearing white, individuals embrace a fresh, clean slate, both literally and metaphorically. The colour represents innocence, and as Holi signifies the triumph of good over evil, the act of dressing in white signifies a new beginning, where all past grievances are washed away, and relationships are renewed. As the popular saying on the festival goes, ‘Bura Na Maano Holi Hai', the day is also traditionally used to forgive about past mistakes and move on with a fresh start.

Apart from the traditional aspect of it, white also provides a perfect canvas for the myriad colours of Holi. As the bright powders cover a person’s attire, it can be seen as a representation of how the festival of colours brings people together, washing away negativity and filling life with positivity. However, in most Indian households, not white, but old, raggy outfits are used for the festival so that they can be thrown away after the day.
Holi generally falls in between summer and winter in India. While the breeze remains pleasant, the sun lights up the sky as a reminder of the incoming scorching days. In such a weather, white becomes the perfect colour. In earlier times, white clothing was often made from natural materials like cotton, making it more comfortable to wear during the hot spring days of the festival. Cotton fabrics, which are breathable and light, are ideal for the physical activity and water play involved in Holi celebrations, ensuring comfort while engaging in festivities.

Besides its symbolic importance, there’s also a practical reason for choosing white on Holi. Coloured powders are often made from natural dyes, and the easiest way to ensure that these colours show up vibrantly is by wearing lighter-coloured clothing. Dark-coloured clothing may hide the true brightness of the colours, whereas white helps the hues to stand out, making the experience of playing Holi even more delightful. Additionally, after the festival, white clothes are easier to wash and clean when compared to darker colours, which may retain some traces of the coloured powders.
