In Hungary, a new ice cream trend is captivating adventurous taste buds. Roberto Confectionery, a quaint parlour in Tatabanya, has introduced an array of savory ice creams that are creating a sensation across social media. The brainchild of Robert Reinhardt, the shop has become renowned for its zany flavours like goulash gelato, paprika chicken, and even spaghetti Bolognese.
Beer, potato ice creams
The 44-year-old Reinhardt, who initially launched with beer and potato pancake ice creams, has seen his business skyrocket after experimenting with savory Hungarian staples. His inventive approach has expanded beyond local cuisine to include global favourites like scrambled eggs with bacon. “It’s not just a gimmick; there’s real potential for exciting flavors,” Reinhardt explains. Priced at 500 forints (1.27 euros) per scoop, the ice cream has significantly boosted the shop’s turnover, prompting Reinhardt’s wife Ena to acknowledge their surprise at the overwhelming response.
How are dessert lovers reacting to Hungarian eccentric flavours?
Customer reactions to the unconventional flavours are mixed but generally positive. Masseuse Ildiko praised the special offerings, particularly the tomato soup and fried cheese flavours. “They were unusual but surprisingly delicious,” she said. However, some patrons are less impressed. Lawyer Krisztian Kiss appreciated the authenticity but expressed reluctance to return, while his young son found the experience unsettling.
Despite some negative feedback, the curiosity and buzz surrounding these unusual treats continue to grow. Social media has played a crucial role, with posts about the flavors garnering tens of thousands of views, and some reaching up to a million. Reinhardt is capitalizing on this momentum by planning to open a second shop in Budapest and continuing to offer his distinctive ice creams year-round.
