One health-related problem that is quite visible to see on someone's skin is varicose veins. Untreated varicose veins can reportedly be risky because there is a high chance of blood clotting within the veins. Apart from the pain and swelling, clotted blood is one factor that can affect one's health majorly. Therefore this problem needs to be taken seriously. Roughly 1 in 4 adults are affected by this commonly found condition.

What are varicose veins?

Varicosities or famously known as varicose veins occur when the veins grow enlarged, and overloaded with blood. These veins appear swollen and thick. They are raised and have a bluish-purple or red colour. The affected people often feel a lot of pain. This condition is widespread in women and is found rarely with men. According to Dr Judith Marcin, who spoke to a medical portal, around 25% of all grown-ups have varicose veins. Varicose veins have been observed appearing on the lower parts of the limb.

Some potential causes for varicose veins include

  • Pregnancy
  • Menopause
  • Age over 50
  • Standing for long periods
  • Obesity
  • Family history of varicose veins

Symptoms

Symptoms of varicose veins include highly visible veins, usually on your legs. A person may deal with a lot of pain, swelling, and heaviness around the enlarged veins. A person may develop discolouration mostly bluish or reddish in colour. In serious conditions, the varicose veins may bleed significantly and form ulcers.

If a person if having symptoms of this problem, it is advisable for them to visit a doctor and get themselves treated. Varicose veins can only seem risky if they are not taken care of with proper attention. People who are overweight have an increased risk of developing varicose veins. Pregnant women are more receptive to varicose veins and need to consult a physician if the problem persists for a long time.
