The state of Maharashtra holds some of the exotic locations and hill stations in the country. It is the homeland of the great Sahayadri mountains that stand high throughout the west coast of India, popularly known as the Western Ghats. According to the history of India, the British rulers have built quite a number of hill stations in Maharashtra during the colonial era. Here is a list of beautiful hill stations in Maharashtra that you can plan for your next vacation.

Lonavla

Lonavla is one of the most well-known and most visited hill stations in Maharashtra. It lies at a height of 622 meters in the Sahyadri ranges. Spread across an area of 38 square kilometres, Lonavla serves as a popular monsoon getaway. It is said that the name ‘Lonavla’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Lonavali’ which denotes ‘group of caves’, as there is a number of caves in and around the hill station. Reportedly, Lonavla along with Khandala was developed in 1871 by Lord Elphinstone, the Governor of the Bombay Presidency.

Mahabaleshwar

Mahabaleshwar is the scenic hill station located in the Satara district of Maharashtra. Mahabaleshwar comprises of three villages namely, Malcolm Peth, Old Mahabaleshwar and a portion of Shindola village. The present-day Mahabaleshwar was developed in 1829-30. During the time, it became the summer capital of the Bombay Presidency. This beautiful tourist attraction is the source of the river Krishna that flows across four states.

Matheran

Matheran is another scenic location in the Karjat Tehsil in Raigad district of Maharashtra. It is a part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and is said to be one of the smallest hill stations in India. Located in the Western Ghats, Matheran stands at a height of 800 meters. Reportedly, the district collector of Thane, Hugh Poyntz Malet developed Matheran in 1850 AD. The hill station is popular for its viewpoints that offer panoramic views of the peaks of the Western Ghats.

Bhandardara

Bhandardara is a holiday resort located in Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra. It is located at an altitude of 750 meters on the banks of river Pravara. It is a popular stopover for people travelling to religious places in Nashik and Shirdi. Bhandardara is replete with splendid waterfalls and, mountains, green cover and a tranquil atmosphere. Eco-tourism enthusiasts would be cherished to find trekking and hiking opportunities here. Major attractions of Bhandardara are Arthur Lake, Randha Waterfalls, Umbrella Falls, Bhandardara Dam also known as Wilson Dam and Amruteshwar Temple.
