Trekking near Mumbai: Three spots in Maharashtra that you must visit

The Sahyadris in Maharashtra offer a panoramic view of mountains, lakes and is a heaven for trekking and adventure enthusiasts. Here are three treks to go to.

Trekking is an amazing experience which one must undertake at least once. If you love trekking as a hobby and you are living or visiting Mumbai then here are the best places near Mumbai for trekking. Usually, treks in the Sahyadris are undertaken during monsoon but there is no hard and fast rule as such. Check out these three places for trekking near Mumbai.

Lohagad Fort:

Lohagad is at a distance of 11 km from Lonavala, 66 km from Pune and 114 km from Mumbai. Lohagad makes an ideal trekking destination for trekkers from Pune and Mumbai because of its accessibility and lush green surroundings. The trek is very popular, especially during monsoons. It is a simple, very scenic and pleasant trek. This fort offers aerial views of Karla, Bhaja caves and Pawna Lake. The highlight of Lohagad fort trek is the 'Vinchu Kada' which resembles a scorpion's tail. This structure situated outside of the main section of the fort and requires an additional 15-20 minutes of walking to reach the edge.

Harishchandragad Fort:

Rohidas, Taramati and Harishchandra are the three peaks in Harishchandragad. Taramati peak is the highest peak in the fort and provides a beautiful panoramic view of the nearby surroundings and the forest area. Many peaks and attractions like Malshej Ghat, Jivdhan, Nane Ghat, Ratangad and Kalsubai can also be seen from here. Konkan Kada or the Konkan cliff is a semi-circular rock wall and resembles a Cobra's hood. Apart from trekking opportunities, this fort has lot of temples and caves within the premises. The fort has a carved Lord Vishnu Temple with many idols and is believed to have been constructed by the Kalchuri dynasty.

Kalsubai Peak:

At a distance of 12 km from Bhandardara, Kalsubai Peak is a mountain peak in Sahyadri Hills in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra.  The trekking route attracts a large number of visitors. There is a small temple at the top of Kalsubai mountain where people offer prayers to local deity Kalsubai. The temple houses an old well, where the water level never drops below 3 feet. There is a Hanuman temple near to the stream and it provides an important landmark to commence the trek as well as a resting post for those returning from their trek. The route from this temple takes the trekkers straight to the summit.
