Eoin Morgan calls upon team to improve fielding standards post NZ loss

After England lost to New Zealand by 21 runs in the second T20 at Wellington, skipper Eoin Morgan on Sunday said that the team's fielding standards were not up to the mark and certainly what the team 'aspires to'. Morgan said that there were a number of catches dropped and with regards to the team's standards and that the team expects more. He also said that, as a team, the players need to make mistakes in order to improve.

"We expect more," says Morgan

"It is not a great reflection of the performance when you drop that number of catches in a match. Few of the catches were dropped right under the sun which makes it even worse. With regards to our standard catches, we expect more," ICC quoted Eoin Morgan. "I think it's more of an attitude thing because there's such a short turnaround, the natural default of any player is to step back and not commit to a 50-50 chance or their mindset changes to go back in their shell. That's not what we want, we want guys continuing to attack the ball, find themselves in hot spots if they're good enough and if they drop catches, they drop catches. That's the nature of it," he added.

The skipper also said that if the players get it easy from the start then it is not a great opportunity. "We have to make mistakes. We want to see guys get out of their comfort zone, put into difficult situations and how they react from there. Chances will continue to come and the team will get more opportunities, no matter what the result is," said Morgan. 

New Zealand beat England to level series

New Zealand completed a clinical victory over England in the second T20 at Wellington, as they grabbed a 21-run win to bring the series to level. Chasing a target of 177, England's top-order failed to fire all cylinders with New Zealand bowlers striking at regular intervals. New Zealand skipper Tim Southee struck gold right in the first ball of his spell and got rid of England opener Jonny Bairstow. Following that, England lost wickets in a flurry with just opener Dawid Malan and Eoin Morgan doing their bit to get the scoreboard ticking. Chris Jordan's quickfire 36 runs off 19 balls studded with three fours and three sixes went in vain as he was dismissed by Santer. The two teams will lock horns for the third T20 on November 5 at Nelson.
