Rohit Sharma scored his sixth hundred today against South Africa on Saturday in their final Test match of the 3-match series in Ranchi. This was Rohit’s third ton in the series. He became the first batsman to hit three hundreds in a series against South Africa after his twin centuries in the first Test in Vizag. We look at the top five centuries scored by Indian batsmen on Indian soil against the Proteas.

India vs South Africa: Virender Sehwag 319, Chennai 2008

Virender Sehwag set the MA Chidambaram Stadium on fire scoring his second test triple century in 2008. Sehwag scored 319 off just 304 deliveries, hitting 42 boundaries and 5 sixes. Sehwag’s assault is still the highest score by an Indian in Test cricket. The effort is commendable considering South Africa had an attack comprising of Dale Steyn, Makhaya Ntini, Morne Morkel, Paul Harris and Jacques Kallis.

India vs South Africa: Mayank Agarwal 215, Vishakapatnam 2019

Mayank Agarwal, playing his first test in India, scored a splendid century against a hapless South African bowling attack in the first Test of the ongoing series in Vizag. Agarwal scored 215, which was laced with 23 fours and 6 sixes. His effort helped India register a massive 203-run victory, taking a 1-0 lead in the series.

India vs South Africa: Ajinkya Rahane 127, Delhi 2015

Ajinkya Rahane is India’s crisis man. On a rank turner, Rahane rescued India from a 139/6 to 334 all out. Rahane scored 127 runs off 215 balls, building valuable partnerships with the tail to power India to a total far beyond South Africa’s reach. Rahane also scored 100* in the second innings, helping India beat South Africa comfortably by 337 runs.

India vs South Africa: Virender Sehwag 109, Nagpur 2010

South Africa declared at 558/6 after Hashim Amla’s marathon 253*. Coming into bat, Virender Sehwag fought against Steyn’s fiery spells to score a counter-attacking 109 off just 139 balls. Steyn picked 7/51 as India were bowled out for a measly 233, with Sehwag having contributed more than 40% of the team’s runs.

India vs South Africa: Rohit Sharma 176, Vishakapatnam 2019

Playing as an opener for the first time, Rohit Sharma smashed the South African bowlers to all corners of the ground en-route his hundred. Rohit got dismissed at 176, one less than his highest test score, sharing a 317-run opening stand with partner Mayank Agarwal. Rohit scored another hundred in the second innings to help India win the contest by a massive 203 runs.
