Justin Langer with Finch plots Australian T20I dominance on home soil

Team Australia has already started planning for the T20 World Cup to be held 'Down Under' next year in October. Australia’s T20 and ODI captain Aaron Finch, who is back home to play a domestic season, said that he had held discussions with coach Justin Langer on the team dynamics. Aaron Finch said that he has spoken to Justin Langer on probable players who would likely make it to the T20 World Cup team and their schedules in the period leading up to the big event.

Finch said that the team hierarchy, coordinated under Ben Oliver, the new general manager of Australia’s national team, now has a rough idea of which players will be playing at the World Cup. However, Aaron Finch also added that players’ form in the upcoming Marsh One Day Cup would contribute to the final team decision.

Australia: Clear thoughts

According to Aaron Finch, he had a few chats over the last few weeks with selectors and other stakeholders to figure out a basic squad of probable World Cup players. Finch said that the whole idea was not only to have a pool of Australian players who can take the team through the World Cup next year but also be on the same page in terms of team selection. Finch acknowledged that nothing is final yet, and there is always room for change based on form and performance.

Finch said that there were a lot of T20 games to be played in the upcoming months and that this longer exposure to limited over games will help the players with finding their rhythm. Reports suggest some players have already got indications that they are being considered to play in the World Cup as well as the T20 international matches in October this year.

Australia, who have won the ODI World Cup several times, have yet to win the T20 World Cup. In 2010, they came close when they faced England in the final but ended up runners-up. Ahead of the prestigious tournament, the Aussies will play six T20 matches against Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The team will tour South Africa in February, where they will play three more T20 internationals. The team is set to play three more T20 matches against New Zealand in late March.
