Out on 97 in 2011 World Cup Final, Gambhir points finger at MS Dhoni; gets 'jalebis'

It has been almost a year since Gautam Gambhir bid adieu to the game of cricket. In his 15-year cricketing career, Gambhir has played 58 Tests, 137 One Day Internationals and 37 T20Is for India. He was a part of the Indian squad that won the ICC World T20 in 2007 and the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. The former left-handed batsman has played under the captaincy reigns of Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, and MS Dhoni. Speaking about MS Dhoni, Gambhir had held the ex-skipper responsible for costing him a century in the 2011 World Cup final for which he has faced flak from the fans.

Fans have a message for Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir, who had laid a solid foundation for India's run chase after they had lost their star openers early, held the then captain MS Dhoni responsible for having cost him a century. He had revealed it to a daily on Saturday. On his dismissal in the World Cup final, Gambhir said Dhoni’s reminder of his upcoming personal milestone was the reason he missed out on his century in the 2011 World Cup final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai against Sri Lanka. While he was on 97, Dhoni apparently reminded him that he was just three runs away, which Gambhir says made him conscious, resulting in his dismissal.

While many were intrigued by the new information, others also raked up Gambhir's current charge as Delhi MP and made points about his failure to attend a meeting on Delhi's pollution. A big controversy had erupted when he was spotted in VVS Laxman's video indulging in Jalebis and Poha at Indore during the India-Bangladesh test match.

The 2011 World Cup final

Sri Lanka who were playing in their second straight World Cup final had posted a stiff total of 274/6 in their 50 overs. In reply, India got off to a horrendous start after big-hitter Virender Sehwag was dismissed for a second-ball duck by Lasith Malinga. The Men In Blue were in a spot of bother after Sachin Tendulkar's dismissal as the scorecard read 31/2. Gambhir then took the charge of scoring runs and was ably supported by a young Virat Kohli (35) as the duo added 83 runs for the third wicket stand. After Kohli's dismissal, in a rather surprising move, MS Dhoni came out at number four ahead of an in-form Yuvraj Singh. The two were then involved in a 109-run fourth-wicket stand. Gautam Gambhir was castled by Thisara Perera for a 122-ball 97. However, it did not matter as the match was in India's grasp by then and MS Dhoni finished it in style by dispatching Nuwan Kulasekara into the stands as India won their second World Cup after a long wait of 28 years.
