The Indian Cricket Coach Ravi Shastri has commented on India wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant’s shot selection. Shastri has said that Pant sometimes tends to lose his wickets in crucial times, letting the team down. He also pointed out that Pant should be cautious during his game and 'play some sensible cricket'.

Rishabh Pant has gained fame after his IPL performances. He was the fastest Indian wicket-keeper to claim 50 dismissals in Test cricket, surpassing former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Ravi Shastri's comment on Pant

Unfortunately, Pant has often come under the scanner for his impatience as he often tends to go for his shots while ignoring the situation. Earlier during the recent 3rd ODI against West Indies in Port-of-Spain, Pant skipped down the track against bowler Fabian Allen off his 1st ball with India needing 164 runs to win off 22.3 overs and ended up losing his wicket.

Referring to the same incident, Shastri said in an interview, “When you see a shot like the one in Trinidad, off the first ball, (it’s disappointing). He tries to repeat it a couple of times and gets out.”

Shastri added, “There will be a rap on the knuckles there – talent or no talent – because you are letting the team down, forget letting yourself down. You are letting the team down in a situation where you have the captain at the other end (Kohli was at the crease when Pant got out with India needing 164 off 22.3 overs). You have a target to chase where the need of the hour is some sensible cricket.”

Virat Kohli's message to younger players

Giving his own example, Virat Kohli, who made his India debut in 2008, said that he never expected to get a bagful of opportunities in his early days as an international cricketer. "We have 30 odd games (before T20 World Cup). From the team's point of view, it is very clear. Even when I got into the team it is not like I was expecting 15 opportunities. You get four to five opportunities and you have to make the most of it. That is the level we are playing at," Kohli said in an interview.

"I think individuals coming in need to have the mindset (of limited opportunities) because the team definitely has that mindset. Guys who grab the opportunity quickly, they grab the opportunity. It is a delicate balance to strike but it is important because you only have 30 games (to figure it out)."

Besides the T20 World Cup in Australia next year, the Indian cricket team is also focused on the World Test Championship. For the last two T20 International series, including against the West Indies and the ongoing one against South Africa, India has left out spinners Kuldeep Chahal and Yuzvendra Chahal who have made way for Rahul Chahar and Washington Sundar.
