The Premier League is back this weekend and it looks likely to be back with a bang. In a mouthwatering top-of-the-table clash, the Premier League's top two Liverpool and Manchester City will face each other at Anfield on Sunday, November 10. A win for Liverpool would see them extend their lead over Pep Guardiola's Manchester City to nine points.
The Premier League's blockbuster clash on Sunday could shape the Premier League table for the next couple of weeks. Interestingly, Jurgen Klopp did not make any first-team additions in this summer's transfer window, whereas Pep Guardiola has added the likes of Rodri and Joao Cancelo to bolster his ranks. As the two Premier League heavyweights gear up for the first of their two title showdowns this season, here's a look at the most memorable moments from Liverpool vs Manchester City.
Of all the teams in all the European Leagues in all the chits, Manchester City had to walk into Liverpool's stadium to play the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. A trip to Anfield can be daunting for Europe's finest, and so it proved for Pep Guardiola's men. Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were on the scoresheet as Liverpool emerged 3-0 winners in the first leg.
City entered into the game unbeaten in the league. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, looking to make an impression, carried the ball and went past two of the City players to rifle a low shot past Ederson and give Liverpool the lead. Leroy Sane then levelled for City when he struck a shot and beat Loris Karius at his first post. However, Liverpool then turned on in style. Firmino bullied John Stones to latch on to a ball from Chamberlain and scoop it past Ederson to restore Liverpool's lead. Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah then scored to end City's unbeaten run in the league that season.
The Etihad was the venue for this game as City trailed Liverpool by seven points. Sergio Aguero and Leroy Sane struck in this game to hand City the win. Despite having record signing Alisson in goal, Liverpool failed to hold Manchester City's onslaught and succumbed to defeat during this New Year thriller.
The second leg of the aforementioned Champions League quarter-final was an interesting one. Gabriel Jesus scored early in the game to spark some hope of a Manchester City comeback. However, when Ederson appeared to shove Sadio Mane, City players paused for a second to check if the referee was going to award a penalty. Salah caught the City defence unawares to dink the ball into City's goal and net Liverpool's equaliser. Firmino then slipped a cool finish past Ederson to give Liverpool a 5-1 aggregate win in the quarter-final against City.
With two games in hand, City faced league leaders Liverpool as they looked to topple the Reds. Liverpool took an early lead when Raheem Sterling showed great composure to brilliantly finish an attack from Luis Suarez. Martin Skrtel then headed in a corner from Steven Gerrard to double Liverpool's lead, before Philippe Coutinho pounced on a loose clearance from Fernandinho to settle a close game for Liverpool.
