UEFA Champions League 2019: Analysis of the Group D opening match between Atletico Madrid and Juventus. The match ended in a tie with a scoreline of 2-2.

Atletico Madrid midfielder Hector Herrera, who came on in the 76th minute in place of Thomas Lemar, helped the Spanish side to equalise the score with his late goal in the 90th minute against Juventus in the Group D UEFA Champions League opener. The visitors, Juventus struck the first two goals of the match. Later on, Atletico went on to equalise the game with a 2-2 scoreline at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. Eventually, it was a draw as the Italian club had 54 per cent of the possession. 

Match Statistics

The hosts took 19 shots in the match of which four were on goal while Juventus took 11 shots of which six were on target. Juventus successfully completed 502 passes while Atletico completed 404 passes in the match. Three yellow cards were given in the match. For Juventus, it was a strange scene as both their goal scorers - Blaise Matuidi and Juan Cuadrado were given yellow cards. The third yellow card of the match was given to Spanish international Diego Costa in the 83rd minute.

Goal Saga

After the frustrating first half without goals, both the teams were in no mood to leave the match goalless. Juventus winger Juan Cuadrado scored the first goal in the 48th minute with his left foot before his fellow teammate Blaise Matuidi scored the second goal in the 65th minute with a classy header, making the scoreline 2-0. Stefan Savic bounced back for the Spanish side in the 70th minute with a header inside the six-yard box. Herrera equalised with a late corner, assisted by Kieran Trippier for the hosts.

In another match of Group D, Lokomotiv Moscow Defeated Bayern Leverkusen with a 2-1 scoreline. In the upcoming clashes, Atletico Madrid will be travelling to Russia to face Lokomotiv on 1st October while Juventus will host Bayern Leverkusen on the same day.
