Alexander Zverev's Swiss Indoors loss heats up race to ATP Finals

Alexander Zverev who lost the finals of Shanghai Masters recently was knocked in the first round by American Taylor Fritz with 7-6(9/7), 6-4 scoreline.

With just two spots remaining for a place in the eight-man ATP Finals in London, Alexander Zverev has his work cut out after losing in the first round of ATP Swiss Indoor to Taylor Fritz. The American beat Zverev 7-6(9/7), 6-4 with 14 aces to his name. The 21-year-old German came into the tournament having lost the final at Shanghai Masters to Russia's Daniil Medvedev.

ATP Swiss Indoors: Alexander Zverev vs Taylor Fritz

Zverev fought in the opening set to take it into a tie-breaker. He held a 4-0 lead, but the American clawed back and produced an outstanding reflex volley for set-point at 6-5. The Russian second seed erased it with a forehand winner and earned his set-point at 7-6, but Fritz evened the score with an overhead smash.

Zverev followed up with a big forehand and an ace for a commanding advantage but was overwhelmed in the second by his American opponent in 86 minutes. Zverev’s dip in form in the second set gave Fritz the advantage as he closed the match in one hour and 25 minutes.

After the loss, Zverev said that he was completely flat for some reason and was also tired and not focused at all. It was a weird feeling said the German star. He also said that he may go home for a few days and clear his mind. he also said that he will try to do well in Paris and hopefully make it to London. Zverev will be defending the title in London after winning the tournament last November, beating Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic back-to-back

ATP Swiss Indoors: Alexander Zverev's race to ATP Finals

The German is in seventh place in the points chart with 2,855 points and holds a 410-point lead over ninth-placed Roberto Bautista Agut. The Spaniard begins his Basel campaign in the night session against last year’s runner-up, Marius Copil of Romania.
