The 38-year-old Swiss man ended a five-match losing streak against Djokovic and clinched his 16th semi-final in 17 appearances at the season finale. The Swiss broke once in the first set and twice in the second to beat his rival for the first time since 2015.

Roger Federer had only won two of their previous 11 outings, the last of which was an upsetting loss in a five-set marathon in the final at the All England Club in July. This was also Federer’s first win over Djokovic in four years.

The match was so exciting because of Djokovic’s thrilling defeat against Thiem on Tuesday which meant both men had a do or die situation in front of them. Federer thrived under pressure whereas Djokovic looked tense and nervous, with a double fault twice in a row to open his service game at 1-1. Federer pounced, slamming two crosscourt backhands in successive points to break.

The 38-year-old produced one of his best serving sets of the year throughout the first set as he fired eight aces and landed 19 of 23 first serves on the ballistic, low bouncing courts of the O2 Arena. He stared down the best returner in the world yet relinquished only three points on his serve.

After looking at Federer’s struggles earlier in the tournament, this was a particularly remarkable win. There is no athlete who has been described in a magniloquent way as Federer has been throughout his tennis career.

His tennis is always framed balletic, elegant and something alien, often contradicting the fact that it has taken so much grit and perseverance for him to compete continuously at the highest level for so long. The Swiss man has given himself another chance to win his seventh ATP Finals title.
