Daniil Medvedev to miss out on Kremlin Cup in Russia citing fatigue

Daniil Medvedev has pulled out of the Kremlin Cup to be held in Moscow, citing exhaustion. The 23-year-old Russian, who won his fourth title on Sunday at the Shanghai Masters, promised his fans he will return to action in Vienna. The world number 4 said that playing six finals in a row had taken a toll on him physically and mentally. He stated that if he were to play in Moscow, he might not be able to give his best performance.

Medvedev Exhausted

Defending his decision to not play in his home country, the Russian said that he did not want to step onto the court when he knew he would not be able to give his 100 per cent. In a recent interview with ATP, he said, "I have played here for four years. Each time, I have improved my performance. I am sad that this year I will not be able to play in front of my countrymen. But I need to listen to my body, and right now, I am exhausted."

The US Open finalist has won 59 matches to lead the ATP Tour and has surpassed tennis legend Roger Federer for third place in the ATP race to London. Medvedev was quick to dispel fears over his readiness to participate in the ATP finals to be held in London and also promised he would be participating in the Vienna cup next week. He also said that he planned to play in the Davis Cup.

Addressing the press after winning the ATP1000 in China, he commented on his fantastic year he has had so far, Medvedev said that it felt surreal. "I never dreamt of playing six finals in a row, or playing a final at the US Open or surpassing Federer in the ATP Race. It all feels like a dream, and yet, I have worked very hard to be here. I am in a great mood."
