The incident occurred after the conclusion of the tournament, where India's men's and women's teams made history by winning double gold. During the routine team photo session, the Pakistani players inadvertently held the Indian flag, creating a viral moment on social media.
The men's team, led by D Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, and R Praggnanandhaa, showcased their prowess by defeating Slovenia in the final round, securing the top spot with an impressive 21 out of 22 possible points. Gukesh, the standout player, won 10 out of 11 rounds, contributing significantly to India's victory.
"I am just super happy right now," Gukesh said after winning his final round game against giant-killer Vladimir Fedoseev of Slovenia on Sunday.
"It was a very nice experience for me personally and for the team...this was basically a dream (come true)," Gukesh said in the final press conference of the Olympiad.
The women's team, led by D Harika, Tania Sachdev, and R Vaishali, clinched the gold by winning a tense final against Azerbaijan. This historic double gold medal win for India marked a momentous occasion.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday lauded India's young chess players for their historic achievement at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, where both the men's and women's teams clinched their maiden gold medals.
During the interaction, the players presented the Prime Minister with a chessboard, after which Praggnanandhaa and Erigaisi played a quick game of chess, which left Modi spellbound.
