Former England batter Nick Knight recently provided his inputs on whether England players should play the Indian Premier League or not. This comes at a time when several England players have backed out of the cash rich tournament and others are not getting the desired price. Nick Knight also revealed that the England players are getting paid handsomely by the English Cricket Board and thus they don't feel the need to travel to other countries to participate in their T20 Leagues.
Several England players have backed out of the Indian Premier League which has raised a lot of debates around English players and IPL. Harry Brook recently pulled out of the IPL which was his second time doing so in consecutive years. According to various reports, Ben Duckett was also contacted by Delhi based franchise, Delhi Capitals but he declined to play in the tournament.
Amidst all of this Nick Knight feels that England players do not need to travel to other countries to play their T20 leagues as the ECB pays the players well and they are ‘well looked after now.’
"Rob Key, who is in charge back at the ECB, has basically tried to - and he's fairly right - encouraged his players to play as much for England [as possible]. They've got a five-Test series against India. They've got an Ashes to follow. They've got multi-format players, like Harry Brook and Mark Wood - they're pretty well looked-after now. And they're going to have to be looked after. There's a bit of that influence. So they perhaps don't need to travel and play in all these leagues around the world," said Nick Knight in his statement regarding the IPL and English players.
Nick Knight while speaking to ESPNCricInfo further stated that of England players are not getting the desired price at the IPL auction then there are several other leagues that are popping up and players should look to play there if they want to.
"There are other leagues popping up as well. If you're not going to get the full price [at the IPL auctions] that perhaps you might want to get, you might want to play in another league. So there are a number of these sort of factors flying around for some of these players," said Nick Knight as he added on to his statement.
The number of English players in the IPL is going down as there are only 10 players playing in the league in 2025 as compared to the 18 who played the IPL in 2024.
