Shubman Gill's struggle in Tests continues to haunt him. The 24 year old hasn't managed to put up big scores this year as he hasn't been able to replicate his ODI form in the longer format. He failed miserably in the 1st Test as South Africa handed the visitors their biggest defeat on the South African soil.

3 things you need to know

  • India lost to South Africa in the 1st Test
  • This is South Africa's biggest home win over India
  • India are yet to win a Test series in South Africa

Shubman Gill failed to score big in the 1st Test

Gill's score was 2 and 26 respectively as he fell quite cheaply in both the innings. Nandre Burger picked up the wicket of Gill in the first innings as his gloves grazed the ball down the leg side. In the second innings Marco Jansen broke through his defence as Gill departed to the pavilion. Apart from Virat Kohli, no other players managed to survive the South African onslaught as India's dream of wining their first series crashes severely.

Sunil Gavaskar pointed out Shubman Gill's flaws

Sunil Gavaskar didnt seem to be very happy with Gill's way of getting out and pointed out the flaw in his batting. In an interaction with Star Sports, the former Indian captain said, "The length was very good, it was a fuller length, but Shubman Gill probably made just one mistake. He wouldn't have been in trouble had he tried to play towards mid-on. He would have got an inside edge. He tried to play towards mid-wicket.

“The bat wasn't straight at all, the edge of the bat was visible, and the ball went through. If even a slight face of the bat was visible, he would have got an inside edge but that didn't happen. Marco Jansen was getting hit when he was bowling on the off-stump. So he thought of bowling on the pads and he (Gill) got out when he did that.”
