Shreyas Iyer emerged as one of the standout batters for India in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. Having compounded 530 runs in the World Cup and being a capable performer in all three formats, Iyer's position in the team was ostensibly cemented. However, some unknown turn of events saw his stature dwindle, leading to his eventual departure from the India side. As considerable time has passed, Iyer has finally opened up on his sudden dismissal from team India.
Following some quiet months, Shreyas Iyer has started to make rumblings again. This time not only as a batter, but as the captain of KKR too. Iyer returned to captaining Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024 and took the team to its third-ever championship. Iyer is not a part of the Team India side that is currently on tour for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, but an entry back to the Indian side is on the cards.
Through the medium of YouTube, Shreyas Iyer laid out clarity on why he was suddenly dropped and his central contract was cancelled. Iyer divulged that, following the ODI World Cup, he wanted to take a breather and focus on building his strength. He stated that in between some miscommunication transpired with the decision makers at BCCI, and thus some calls did not go his way.
"I had a tremendous World Cup. I wanted to take a break after that, work on my body & build my strength around certain areas - due to lack of communication, there were some decisions that didn’t go in my favour." Iyer said on his YouTube channel.

Despite the setback, Iyer kept in mind that his performance will once again bring him into the fray and following Mumbai's win in the Ranji Trophy and KKR's exceptional domination in IPL 2024, he is hopeful about the re-entry and aims to win many trophies in future.
"At the end of the day the bat is always going to be in my hand & it’s upon me to perform and win trophies. I knew that once I win the Ranji Trophy and the IPL, that will be an apt answer to whatever happened in the past. Thankfully, everything fell in the right place. We have a lot more trophies to win in the future". Iyer added.
