ICC Chairman-elect Jay Shah commits to making India a sporting powerhouse on National Sports Day

India celebrates National Sports Day every year on August 29. The day is celebrated to mark the contributions of Major Dhyan Chand.

Jay Shah, the newly elected Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the current Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has pledged to elevate India to the status of a global sporting powerhouse. His commitment came on National Sports Day, a day celebrated across the nation in honor of the legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, whose birth anniversary is commemorated on August 29.

Jay Shah extends wishes on National Sports Day

Taking to his official Twitter handle, Jay Shah expressed his admiration for India's athletes and coaches, acknowledging their relentless dedication and contribution to the nation's sporting landscape. "On this National Sports Day, I warmly commend our athletes, coaches, and everyone who has devoted their life to sports," Shah wrote.

Jay Shah's tribute to Major Dhyan Chand, a figure synonymous with India's rich sporting history, highlighted the deep-rooted legacy that Shah aims to build upon as he steps into his new role at the ICC.

"As we honor the legacy of Major Dhyan Chand Ji on his birth anniversary, let's commit ourselves to making India a powerhouse on the global sporting stage!" Shah added, emphasizing his vision for India's future in sports.

India celebrates National Sports Day every year on August 29. The day is celebrated to mark the contributions of Major Dhyan Chand, who represented the Indian hockey team from 1925 to 1949. During this time, Major Dhyan Chand won several accolades for India including three Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936.

As far as Jay Shah is concerned, he was recently elected unopposed as the Independent Chair of the ICC. Shah will replace New Zealand's Greg Barclay and will assume his duties from December 1 this year. At 35, Shah became the youngest person to be elected as the ICC Chairman.
