IPL 2022 Auction, Day 1 Highlights: Ishan Kishan, Deepak Chahar biggest buys of the day

The IPL Auction 2022 is underway, where we witnessed Shreyas Iyer bagging a massive Rs. 12.25 cr at Kolkata Knight Riders, followed by Mohd. Shami who was sold to Gujarat Titans for Rs. 6.25 cr.

IPL 2022 Auction: Top 5 buys at auction so far

1. Shreyas Iyer - The former Delhi Capitals batter has been picked by Kolkata Knight Riders for a whopping sum of Rs. 12.25 crore. He is the most expensive buy amongst the ten marquee players. 

2. Harshal Patel - The Gujarat pacer has been retained by Royal Challengers Bangalore for a hefty sum of Rs. 10.75 crore. He was in the 'Capped All-rounders' category. 

3. Kagiso Rabada - The South Africa pacer has been sold to Punjab Kings for Rs. 9.25 crore at the auction. He was part of the Delhi Capitals set up until last year.  

4. Jason Holder - The West Indies all-rounder has been purchased by Lucknow Super Giants for Rs. 8.75 crore. He was with Sunrisers Hyderabad until IPL 2021.

What are the mandatory rules set for all 10 franchises by the BCCI?

  • The upcoming IPL 2022 mega auctions will be held under strict bio-bubbles.
  • All team officials of the franchises will need to return with the COVID-19 negative RT-PCR report on February 9, 10, and 11. The testing will be done by BCCI-accredited medical agency. 
  • Unlike the IPL 2018 mega auction, there will be no Right to Match(RTM) option available for the franchises in the upcoming auctions.
  • The salary purse for the teams has been increased from INR 80 crore to INR 90 crore for the IPL 2022 players auction, as it will let the teams accumulate more players. This is an effort from BCCI to rope in more young talents with a primary focus on the Indian domestic circuit.
  • The Indian cricket governing board will keep a close eye on the individuals arriving at the team hotel on February 11 and they will be closely monitored for any Covid-19 symptoms.
  • The testing for COVID-19 will take place from 12 AM to 7 AM for the smooth conduct of the auctions. The members are required to stay put in their hotel rooms until their negative test reports arrive.
  • All attendees of the auction are expected to share full details about them, including the COVID vaccination results with BCCI’s medical team (If any).
  • The participants of the auction are required to wear masks in the auditorium at all times.

What is IPL Auction Silent Tiebreaker?

During the auction, if a team spends its entire available amount in its purse to purchase a player, the IPL management has a specific rule for this situation, called the ‘Silent Tiebreaker’. It allows the team to sign the player with a ‘Silent Tiebreaker’ bid despite having no money to spend. Both teams will be required to submit written bids with the amount they are willing to pay for the player. The highest bidder will go ahead and sign the cricketer, while there is no limit to the bid franchises can submit while using this rule.

What is the lowest and highest base price set for IPL Auction?

The lowest base price of any player during the IPL 2022 mega auction is INR 20 lakh while the highest base price during the IPL 2022 mega auction is INR 2 crore. The 10 marquee players have all been marked at INR 2 crore.

Overall, there are 48 players (17 Indian and 31 overseas) with a base price of INR 2 crore, and then the base price reduces to INR 1.5 crore, INR 1 crore, INR 75 lakh, INR 50 lakh, INR 40 lakh, INR 30 lakh and INR 20 lakh.

How does the auction process work?

The players have been divided into different sets based on their specialty, keeping aside a group of ten marquee players who will open the auction. The marquee set will be followed by a full round of capped players based on specialisation i.e batsmen, allrounders, wicketkeeper-batsmen, fast bowlers, and spin bowlers. After the set of capped players are finished the attention will then turn towards the uncapped players who will then go under the hammer.
