The Indian Cricket Team has advanced to the Super 8 of T20 World Cup 2024 and are one of the favourites to win the tournament. But an Achilles heel that could turn up for India in the tournament is that their lack of depth in the all round department.

The recently concluded IPL 2024 according to Indian cricket legend has further worsened the situations for all rounders in the nation with the new impact sub rule. This ignited a major debate in the sport and Indian cricket that whether the new impact sub rule is doing a lot of harm to Indian Cricket than good.

Weighing up on the debate recently is an Indian Cricket batting legend who believes that Impact sub rule needs to go away as it is not good for Indian Cricket.

Indian Cricket legend says impact sub rule needs to go away

Indian Cricket legend and batting maestro Wasim Jaffer recently made his appearance on the Beerbiceps podcast and bluntly said that the impact sub rule needs to go away. He cited that India continually keeps failing in World Cups because they don't have the right balance when it comes to players who can bat and bowl.

“This is impact sub rule is not good for Indian cricket. It has to go away if we want to make Indian Cricket better,” said Wasim Jaffer.

Wasim Jaffer further added that players like Shivam Dube not getting the opportunity to bowl is disastrous for Indian team in world cup.

“We need to encourage batters to bowl more often and then give them bowling in matches as well. This is the biggest problem I have with the impact sub in IPL. This does not encourage our all rounders to bowl in the IPL. If you look at Shivam Dube he has been selected into the World Cup squad but he didn't bowl in the entire IPL. We are expecting Shivam Dube to be out sixth bowler in the World Cup but when was the last time he bowled in a match”, said Wasim Jaffer.

Wasim Jaffer further cited that players like Washington Sundar have not gotten a chance to play in the IPL due to the impact sub rule which is further hampering the options available to Indian team.

“Look at Washington Sundar he is not getting to play any matches because his role as an all rounder has been taken over by Impact sub. He is not able to bowl neither bat. Look at Venkatesh Iyer, he is not able to bowl as well hence this impact player rule is not good for Indian Cricket. We need to encourage batters to bowl more often. Identifying that kind of talent is even more important his record in Ranji Trophy wasn't great but got picked into the Indian side based on promise and potential, we need to make more such selections," concluded Jaffer.

Wasim Jaffer is the latest to sound off on the impact sub rule and ahead of the next IPL in 2025 BCCI secretary Jay Shah has affirmed in the past that they will reconsider what to do with the rule going forward.
