PBKS Official Teases Potential IPL Auction Surprise Amid Speculation Over Rohit Sharma's MI Future
PBKS official hints at potential IPL auction surprise, fueling speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma's future with Mumbai Indians.
With the IPL 2024 super auction drawing closer, all eyes are on Rohit Sharma, the respected skipper of India's Test and ODI cricket teams, who was replaced by Hardik Pandya as captain of the Mumbai Indians. The big issue is whether the Mumbai Indians will hang onto Rohit or whether another team will come in to take advantage of his outstanding abilities. As the cricketing world waits impatiently for the results of the next mega auction, the possibility of Rohit Sharma joining a new side has generated much conjecture and expectation. Rohit Sharma is still at his very best, as he led India’s T20I cricket team to lift the ICC T20 World Cup, beating SA in the final.
Will there be a heated bidding war for Rohit Sharma at the IPL 2025 mega auction?
The 2025 MEGA auction may see fierce bidding for Rohit Sharma's services if the Mumbai Indians choose not to keep him. Rohit is probably going to be among the most sought-after players in the auction with his great batting abilities, leadership qualities, and experience. His presence is a major determinant in the next bidding war as teams seeking a seasoned captain might find him to be the ideal leader for their side.
Already showing some interest in Rohit, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) especially search for a new captain after Shikhar Dhawan retired. Preity Zinta, a co-owner of PBKS, had already minimised the concept of purchasing Rohit for the 2024 season; nevertheless, things may change in the 2025 auction. Head of cricket development for the team, Sanjay Bangar has indicated the likelihood but also pointed out that the 37-year-old would probably fetch a premium. Speaking on getting his services Sanjay Bangar said (via the RAO Podcast Youtube channel). Bangar said:
"It all depends on whether we have the money in our pockets. If Rohit comes in the auction, I certainly believe, he is going to go for a high price,"
Beginning his relationship with MI in 2011, Rohit Sharma became captain halfway through the 2013 campaign when Ricky Ponting left. This action proved crucial, as MI won their first championship that same season. MI became a major player under Rohit's leadership and cricketing acumen.
Rohit started his IPL path with the now-defunct Deccan Chargers (DC), where he played in the first three seasons before joining MI. Along with earning the Emerging Player of the Year title, his contributions were essential in DC's 2009 championship triumph. Rohit, who has six IPL trophies, distinguishes himself as the joint most decorated player in IPL history alongside Ambati Rayudu.
Rohit Sharma has accumulated 6,628 runs at an average of 29.72 in 257 matches across his remarkable 17-season IPL record. Although his future remains undisclosed, it will break the internet once MI decides to keep him or not.
